Candlestick charts are the language of trading. Once you can read them, price action starts to make sense. Here’s the beginner’s version — clear and practical.
What a single candle tells you
Each candle represents price movement over a time period (1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day, etc.) and shows four things:
- Open: price at the start of the period
- Close: price at the end
- High: the highest point reached
- Low: the lowest point
The thick part is the body (open-to-close). The thin lines are wicks (or shadows), marking the high and low.
- Green (bullish) candle: close was higher than open — buyers won.
- Red (bearish) candle: close was lower than open — sellers won.
Reading momentum
- Long bodies = strong conviction in one direction.
- Small bodies = indecision.
- Long wicks = the price was pushed there but rejected — often a sign of a reversal or fight between buyers and sellers.
A few classic patterns
- Doji: open and close nearly equal — indecision, possible turning point.
- Hammer: small body with a long lower wick — buyers rejected lower prices, possible bottom.
- Engulfing: a candle whose body fully covers the previous one — a momentum shift.
Caution: No pattern is a guarantee. Patterns raise or lower probabilities; they don’t predict the future. Always combine them with context (trend, volume, support/resistance).
How to practice
- Pick one timeframe (the daily chart is great for learning).
- Look at past moves and see how candles behaved at tops and bottoms.
- Paper-trade or use tiny positions while you learn.
- Add one concept at a time — don’t drown in indicators.
Once you’re comfortable reading charts, apply it carefully with our futures guide and strict risk management.
