Bitcoin is digital money. Ethereum is something different: a global, shared computer that anyone can build on — and ETH is the fuel it runs on.

The core idea: smart contracts

Ethereum launched in 2015, created by Vitalik Buterin and co-founders. Its innovation is the smart contract — a program that lives on the blockchain and executes exactly as written, without a company operating it.

That single idea spawned entire industries:

  • DeFi — lending, borrowing and trading without banks or brokers
  • Stablecoins — most USDT and USDC in existence moves over Ethereum and its networks
  • NFTs — verifiable ownership of digital items
  • DAOs — internet-native organisations governed by token holders

When people say “crypto is programmable money,” Ethereum is what they mean.

ETH vs BTC: different assets, different bets

Buying BTC is a bet on scarce, neutral money. Buying ETH is a bet that economic activity keeps moving onchain — and that Ethereum stays the platform it happens on.

Staking, gas and layer 2s in one minute

  • Gas: every transaction pays a fee in ETH. Busy network = higher gas. This is ETH’s built-in demand.
  • Staking: since 2022, Ethereum is secured by validators who lock up ETH and earn yield (roughly 2–4% APR). Exchanges like Bitget offer staking products that handle the technical side.
  • Layer 2s (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base and others): networks built on top of Ethereum that make transactions dramatically cheaper while inheriting its security. Most user activity now happens there.

The honest risk list

  • ETH has historically fallen as hard as, or harder than, BTC in bear markets.
  • Competing chains (notably Solana) take real market share in users and activity.
  • The “ultrasound money” supply story depends on network usage staying high.

How to buy ETH on Bitget

  1. Create your account and complete verification.
  2. Deposit USDT or fiat — the deposit guide walks through it.
  3. Trade ETH/USDT on spot. If you plan to hold, look at Bitget’s ETH staking products under Earn to put the position to work.
