Futures let you trade with leverage — amplifying both gains and losses. Used carelessly, they’re the fastest way to lose your capital. Used with discipline, they’re a powerful tool. This guide explains the essentials before you place a single order.

What are futures?

A futures contract lets you speculate on a coin’s price without owning it, and to use leverage to control a larger position than your capital alone would allow. On Bitget you can go long (betting the price rises) or short (betting it falls).

Leverage: the double-edged sword

Leverage multiplies your exposure. With 10x leverage, a $100 margin controls a $1,000 position:

  • If the price moves +5%, you gain ~$50 (50% of your margin).
  • If it moves −5%, you lose ~$50 — and a −10% move can wipe out your margin entirely.

Rule of thumb for beginners: start with low leverage (2x–3x, or none at all). High leverage is not a shortcut to profit; it’s a shortcut to liquidation.

Margin modes: isolated vs cross

  • Isolated margin: only the margin assigned to that position is at risk. Best for beginners — your loss is capped.
  • Cross margin: your whole futures balance backs the position. More flexible, but a bad trade can drain everything.

Start with isolated margin.

Liquidation: what it means

If the market moves against you far enough, your position is liquidated — force-closed — and you lose your margin. Your liquidation price depends on your leverage and margin. Always know it before you enter.

Placing your first futures order

  1. Transfer funds to your futures wallet.
  2. Choose a pair (e.g. BTC/USDT).
  3. Set isolated margin and low leverage.
  4. Pick long or short.
  5. Set your entry, a stop-loss, and a take-profit.
  6. Confirm — with a small position size.

Risk management is the whole game

  • Always use a stop-loss.
  • Never risk more than a small % of your account on one trade.
  • Don’t add to a losing position hoping it turns around.
  • Learn technical analysis before trading actively.

Futures reward preparation and punish impulsiveness. Learn first, then open your Bitget account and start small.
